چکیده

Through spin exchange optical pumping it is possible to achieve upwards of nuclear spin polarization in Xe with an NMR signal enhancement of some orders of magnitude over typical thermal signals Hyperpolarized Xe has thus found application in several leading edge technologies At T and K the characteristic relaxation time of enriched polycrystalline Xe Xe Xe is well over hrs su cient for long term storage and transport Longitudinal nuclear spin relaxation of Xe at more convenient elds from to G is studied in detail Signi cant structure in relaxation times vs magnetic eld is seen the most prominent new nding being a sharp local long time T maximum of mins at G Such structure has not been observed in previous measurements of natural Xe Below temperatures of K relaxation can be attributed to cross relaxation with Xe mediated by spin di usion Measurements of Xe relaxation as a function of magnetic eld temperature and Xe isotopic content are reported and compared with expected theoretical behaviors It is seen that the characteristic nuclear spin relaxation of enriched Xe at K is nonexponential at these low elds For elds between G and G these nonexponential relaxation curves can be t well with a speci c spin di usion model Below G no such t is possible and thus quantum mechanical details of the coupling between Xe Xe and the bulk lattice are considered These ndings support the hypothesis that cross relaxation with Xe is indeed a dominant actor in the nuclear spin relaxation of polycrystalline Xe at such low elds and low temperatures To Iris my wife and friend and to my children Gary Jessica Daniel Anita and Nicolas who gave me the reason to carry on

Nuclear spin relaxation of Xe due to persistent xenon dimers

We have measured longitudinal nuclear relaxation rates of Xe in Xe-N2 mixtures at densities below 0.5 amagats in a magnetic field of 8.0 T. We find that intrinsic spin relaxation in this regime is principally due to fluctuations in the intramolecular spin-rotation SR and chemical-shift-anisotropy CSA interactions, mediated by the formation of Xe-Xe persistent dimers. Our results are consistent ...

Phase relationship between the long-time beats of free induction decays and spin echoes in solids

Recent theoretical work on the role of microscopic chaos in the dynamics and relaxation of many-body quantum systems has made several experimentally confirmed predictions about the systems of interacting nuclear spins in solids, focusing in particular on the shapes of spin echo responses measured by nuclear magnetic resonance. These predictions were based on the idea that the transverse nuclear...

Long-time behavior of nuclear spin decays in various lattices

The transverse NMR decays of 129Xe in polycrystalline xenon were recently shown to have a universal property: in the long-time regime these decays all converge to the same sinusoidally modulated exponential function irrespective of the initial transverse spin configuration prepared by a sequence of one or more radio frequency pulses. The present work constitutes a more comprehensive survey of t...

Static and dynamic NMR properties of gas-phase xenon

This thesis presents computational studies of both the static and dynamic parameters of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of gaseous xenon. First, state-of-the-art static magnetic resonance parameters are computed in small xenon clusters by using methods of quantum chemistry, and second, time-dependent relaxation phenomena are investigated via molecular dynamics simulations at d...

Liquid-state nuclear spin comagnetometers.

We discuss nuclear spin comagnetometers based on ultralow-field nuclear magnetic resonance in mixtures of miscible solvents, each rich in a different nuclear spin. In one version thereof, Larmor precession of protons and 19F nuclei in a mixture of thermally polarized pentane and hexafluorobenzene is monitored via a sensitive alkali-vapor magnetometer. We realize transverse relaxation times in e...
